Abstract

The excitation by an e-beam of an open cavity, consisting of a weakly irregular waveguide is computed. The problem consists of solving the electromagnetic wave equation in an irregular cylindrical cavity including the oscillatory current j(w), and the equation of motion of N relativistic electrons which create j(w). At the input of the cavity, the initial electron momenta and the wave impedance are given. At the output of the cavity, the wave impedance must be matched to the impedance of the wave guide. Thus for N particles, a two-point boundary value problem for 3N+2 ordinary differential equations has to be solved. For the simple case 32 particles are used, but to take into account the dispersions in the beam parameters, the quiet-start method is used to limit the number of particles to about 4000.
