Abstract

This study deals with the degradation of different types of coal during extraction, underground conveyance, preparation, washing and surface handling. By contrast with previous studies, which are given as references, this research deals with the chain as a whole and studies a whole range of bituminous coals. A description of the laboratory tests carried out and an interpretation of their results is given. These results illustrate the advantages of conducting systematic tests, especially at the coal's points of use. On the other hand, there appears to be no justification for conducting granulometric measurements at the head of the handling chain, as long as no fatal breaking occurs.
