The impact of the new IAEA transport regulations for the safe transport of radioactive materials on package design and transport
In April 1985, the 1985 Edition of the IAEA Safety Series No. 6 (SS No. 6), Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials, was issued. This is a completely revised edition which will come into force internationally in the late eighties. The "Regulations" are regulations only for transports performed for or by IAEA. Otherwise the "Regulations" are recommendations. They do form a strong basis for all international transports of radioactive materials (RAM) by all modes. International regulations, like the IATA Restricted Article Regulations, incorporate the IAEA-Regulations (IAEA-Regs.) for the transport of RAM. The same applies widely to national regulations. Due to many changes it is important to know in time which will be the major changes and impacts on future package design and RAM transportation. There are "Grandfather-Clauses" included in SS No. 6, but it is only about 3 years until the new Regulations will come into force for international transport. After the expiry of the grandfathering the Regulations will apply in full. New approval of existing casks will be necessary.
