Pyrolysis as a base technology for large agro-energy projects
These proceedings give a general view of the activity all over the world in the field of biomass pyrolysis, and assess the present state of the art of this technology. The main topics of the proceedings were the status of pyrolysis technology and its products; the potential application for local power production (electricity and thermal) for agro-industrial utilization; and the potential interest of pyrolysis as a basic technology for large integrated regional biomass networks. An important part of the conference was dedicated to industrial aspects and it has been confirmed that pyrolysis technology can be implemented in large projects. Moreover, industry is ready to realise plants with a guarantee of performance. An advanced stage has now been reached which allows the step towards large agro-industrial and bio-energy projects, with modular unities based on the pyrolysis conversion technology. These projects are especially promising for southern areas of Europe where programmes of agro-forestal valorisation are considered an important means of socio-economical development worthy of being promoted.
