Abstract

For a toroidal shell of finite wall thickness subject to a given current distribution the related magnetic field distribution is obtained. This allows one to derive the stored magnetic energy of the system, and the distributions of the force density and the mechanical stresses in the shell. Furthermore, the mechanical stresses in the shell are determined for the force density distributions f(p)=const. and f(p)¸(1/r). The virial theorem is applied to the configurations considered and is compared to results of the analytical solutions developed in this study. These solutions supplement the numerical calculations for the modular stellerator coil systems treated in IPP report 2/298.
