Report on the 8th International Conference, Jülich, F.R.G. 2-6th May 1988
This report is a short survey of a conference for non-specialists in the field of surface interactions in controlled fusion devices. Topics reviewed include plasma edge physics in the TEXTOR tokamak with poloidal and toroidal limiters, impurity production and transport at the limiters, recycling of helium and hydrogen in tokamaks with carbon walls, pump limiters, and wall and limiter conditioning. The report ends with a discussion of trapping and transport of hydrogen in carbon and carbonated layers, and research on other confinement systems such as the stellarator and reversed field pinches. Preliminary results are reported from new machines (TORE-SUPRA and the Tokamak de Varennes). The main emphasis is on the choice of graphite as a limiter and wall tile material.
