The nuclear safety code RELAP5 is analysed with respect to its parallelisation potential on the SUPRENUM system, a multiprocessor computer with distributed memory. A parallelisation concept for the hydrodynamic part, which requires no changes of the numerical methods and algorithms is developed. For a representative part of RELAP5 the concept is implemented and test-runs of the parallel code have successfully been performed. Performance estimates for the complete code show promising results. The presented parallelisation concept allows a straightforward extension to the complete RELAP5 code.
