Gain guiding of X-ray laser beams
It is shown that in X-ray laser experiments defocussing effects due to the refractive index of the plasma are eliminated by the gain profile transverse to the direction of beam propagation. The beam is effectively guided by the gain distribution and gain guiding dominates the weak defocussing by the refractive index profile.
