Proceedings of the scientific meeting Cocaine Luxembourg, 14 to 16 January 1987
In the context of the preparatory actions as described in the communication from the Commission to the Council and the European Parliament concerning Community actions to combat the use of illicit drugs, cocaine was chosen as a specific topic to be discussed at a scientific meeting. The first day dealt with prevention, treatment and history of cocaine abuse. Three papers were presented: the impact of cocaine production and abuse in a developing country; epidemiology of cocaine in Europe; and new patterns of cocaine use (crack). On the second day, AIDS and intravenous drug abuse were discussed. Country reports were presented from Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. It became clear that the percentage of cases among intravenous drug abusers continued to show a a marked increase. On the third day, supply reduction, socio-economic consequences of drug abuse in society and needle exchange programmes were discussed.
