Abstract

Research was carried out to develop a system to identify by measurement of the temperature profile on a metal wall, the position of the maximum temperature thereon. This position is associated with the presence on the other side of the wall of the sintering front which is affected by non-uniform conditions. It has been possible to: - establish an instrument that can measure temperature profiles on a metal wall; - design and build the hardware connecting the instrument to a dedicated computer; - design and implement the software. The results show that in the initial part of the sintering process (about 40-50% of the bed depth) the position of the combustion front can be ascertained by measuring the temperature profile on the outside of the metal containing-wall. It has also been found that the manner in which heat is transferred from the mix to the metal wall causes a shift in the two maximum temperature positions. This shift increases with time and so the system cannot be used in the final part of the process.
