The 1984-7 JRC programme was concerned with two aspects of waste management: the nuclear fuel cycle and safe disposal in geological formations. The current programme continues work on the concept of geological disposal through studies of waste characterisation, actinide monitoring and the operation of the PETRA facility as well as the MIRAGE and PAGIS projects. A major part of the Shared Cost Action Programme is the operation of experimental underground facilities and related research. Another important topic is the characterisation of various waste forms and barrier materials. A "Seabed Working Group" has been formed to investigate the feasibility of disposal of HLW in sediments of the deep ocean.
