Evaluation of Mediterranean sheep and goats
The Mediterranean region is characterized particularly by poor soils and a dry climate - these are the conditions in which small ruminants best demonstrate their specific aptitudes. Consequently, the Mediterranean region is an optimal environment for the study and genetic improvement of these species. In the past problems relating to sheep and goats were not considered priorities by zootechnicians, even though they are the main users of the land. Their husbandry, far from being an old fashioned enterprise, is a fundamental step for the development of these areas. Systematic research on sheep and goats has now started using methodologies adapted to the living conditions of these animals in the appropriate regions.
