Abstract

This paper investigates analytically the effect of mass flow and pressure anistropy on the equilibrium properties of an axisymmetric toroidal plasma, with special attention to the poloidal variation of the mass density on the magnetic surfaces and to the nature of the equilibrium system. The paper presents the basic equations and a rapid derivation of the general axisymmetric equilibrium system. The poloidal variation of the mass density is computed in the different models and its dependence from the flow and the pressure anistropy is investigated. Finally, a brief discussion of the type of equilibrium system is given. One of the main results is a unified description of the MHD and GCP equilibrium, based on a general form of the pressures which is common to both models. This allows for detailed comparison between the fluid and the guiding centre approach.
