Abstract

The publication looks at the question of what factors determine whether a potentially risky activity is `acceptable'. Because judgements of acceptability are strongly dependent upon the particular context, it is concluded that there is no simple answer to this question which can be derived from risk analysis. However, qualitative criteria can be developed to help decision makers to evaluate the suitability of risk analyses; a set of criteria is proposed.
