Controlled thermonuclear fusion : The state of the art of research
In the course of the last five years, three large experimental installations of the tokamak type have started working: JET in Europe, TFTR in USA and JT 60 in Japan. After a period of assessment, overcoming "teething troubles", these experiments have produced results and performances worthy of attention. The proposed objectives have been achieved even if some of the problems encountered have not been solved. The characteristics of confined plasmas in these machines - density, temperature and confinement time - have been considerably improved.
