Abstract

The non-linear evolution of tokamak equilibrium with a non-monotonic q-profile is studied in the ideal MHD approximation. A kinked equilibrium with large m=1 deformation is obtained. This equilibrium is not associated with an infinite current sheet at the resonant surface. The relevance of this equilibrium to some of the recent observations of tokamaks is discussed.
