This publication contains eight papers presented at the fusion technology symposium held in Utrecht in 1988. The first paper deals with the design of the engineering features, assembly, equipment and installation procedures of the FTU (Frascati Tokamak Upgrade machine). Other papers concentrate on manufacturing and testing of the FTU poloidal system and toroidal magnet; a detailed 3-D neutronic analysis of the NET shielding system using the MCNP Monte Carlo code; engineering studies, mock-up and manufacturing of a first wall for NET; a Helium cooled ceramic breeder in-tube blanket for a tokamak reactor; the technological problems of a new design for the coupling structures in the FTU; and the results produced by a numerical code which, given the scaling law and scenario, scans all the configuration space looking for "machines" capable of reaching ignition.
