Abstract

The paper discusses computational problems associated with the incorporation of finite strain, inelastic material behaviour into a Lagrangian mesh - Cauchy stress transient dynamic finite element formulation. Special emphasis is placed on numerical integration of rate-type constitutive equations. Accurate and efficient procedures for computing strain increments and converting rotation rates into incremental orthogonal rotations are reviewed. Despite its conditional stability, explicit time integration is considered appropriate for the accurate treatment of transient dynamic problems, particularly those in which the behaviour of wave fronts is of engineering importance. When combined with a diagonal mass representation, explicit methods lead to a global computational scheme of extreme simplicity.
