Abstract

The Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper data were used during an inventory study of the Ardeche area of France. The area has a total surface of 560,000 ha and includes extremely different landscapes with altitude differences of maximum 1600m. To avoid distortion by relief displacement effects, a correction method using digital elevation data has been implemented. Due to inadequate elevation data, topographic parameters such as slope and aspect were omitted from the atmospheric correction of the data set. It is recognised that the vertical variation of atmospheric conditions needs to be accounted for. Digital elevation data have been used for post-classification sorting and corrections.
