Concepts and general principles relating to the preparation and certification of reference materials by the European Community
The aim of the BCR programme is to reduce technical barriers by ensuring comparability of measurements made throughout Europe. One method for achieving this is a system of certified reference materials, established by cooperation between several expert laboratories. This involves in addition an assessment of the reliability of test procedures. Reference materials are discussed in this report in the context of calibration, certification, homogeneity and stability of the materials. The work of the BCR programme is illustrated by a description of the biomedical analysis of enzymes such as gamma-glutamyl transferase.
