Abstract

This publication contains papers presented at a seminar held in Brussels on 27-29 September 1988. The objective of the seminar was to review and discuss scientific information relevant to the decision on whether to approve or reject the applications. Reviews of the available scientific information on mechanisms of somatotropin action and influences of somatotropin on lactation, growth, product quality and animal health and welfare were presented. A session covered the socio-economic effects at farm and national as well as Community level and a paper discussed the possible future alternatives to somatotropin. Finally, a summary report and concluding remarks based on the discussions and information presented have been included.
