The current state of research developments in the different fields of the physics of multiply charged ions is reviewed. Charge exchange between atoms and multiply charged ions, ionisation and excitation in ion-electron interaction, collisions at metal surfaces and the processes to be studied in heavy ion storage rings are successively discussed. The field of Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources (ECRIS) is considered both from the point of view of the basic physics of the production of multiply charged ions and of development of new devices. Emphasis is placed on new possibilities namely Gluon-Quark matter and broad accelerator based applications.
