The report describes the large area multiwire proportional counters used as detectors with the soft X-ray double crystal monochromators at JET. They are designed for observation of radiation from a plasma with electron and ion temperatures in the range 0.54 to 11.3 keV. Emission radiation from all important impurity elements (including oxygen but not carbon) is covered by the accessible Bragg angle ranges using various crystals. Their main features are efficient rejection of background radiation and a high count rate capability of 1.0 E7 photons/s.
