Actinides : The unusual world of the 5f electrons
Fourteen elements, known as the actinides, follow actinium in the Periodic Table. This article reviews the physical and chemical properties of actinides in the elemental form or when combined with other elements, with particular reference to the physics of 5f electrons and their `bonding' behaviour. It also describes some of the problems of material preparation and discusses how their unusual properties may be used to advantage in certain applications.
