Abstract

During 1988 the plasma current obtained on JET was increased to 7MA in the limiter configuration and to 5.3MA in the single null magnetic separatrix configuration. The neutral beam power was increased to 21MW and the ICRH power coupled to the plasma reached 16MW. The maximum power input to a plasma was 35MW including the Ohmic input. The flat top pulse length at 7MA was 2 seconds but at lower current 10 seconds was typical. The heating pulse lengths were typically 2-5 seconds. At 3MA and with 6MW of ICRH, flat tops exceeding 20 seconds were demonstrated. The multiple pellet injector was used extensively during 1988. The main experimental studies during the year concerned high power heating at high plasma current up to 6MA, H mode studies at high plasma current up to 5MA, the hot ion and improved confinement regimes, the heating of pellet fuelled plasmas and beam and RF driven high fusion yield. Important results have been obtained on the behaviour of fast particles (both tritons and high energy minority ions accelerated by ICRH) which are encouraging for alpha heating. The following are critical areas: (1) extrapolation of confinement scaling (particularly with plasma current), (2) peakedness of the plasma profiles and (3) control of impurities.
