The paper discusses the methodology followed in producing an optimised surface profile of belt limiter tiles. It is possible to construct an ideal surface for a belt limiter of fixed poloidal extent in a manner such that the peak heat flux to this limiter is very nearly constant for a broad range of scrape-off thicknesses. At the time of designing these surfaces a set of values had to be assumed for the radius of curvature of the plasma and for the range of scrape-off thickness. The ideal surfaces have been fabricated. Power deposition to these surfaces was computed to be within 5% of the ideal values.
