Application of ion chromatography in steel plant laboratories
This study describes the determination of anions by ion chromatography in three important areas. - Analysis of waste waters: in the case of industrial waters with very different concentrations of F(-), Cl(-), NO(2)(-), NO(3)(-), PO(4)(3-), So(4)(2-), the six anions can be determined using only one standard solution and a "blank". The analysis of the CN(-) ion uses two methods of measurement (conductivimetric and electrochemical). - Determination of the anions in steel treatment baths: (i) a method for determining the anions in hydrochloric pickling baths by injection of samples into the chromatographic system. (ii) a method for determination of chloride and sulphate anions in rolling mill emulsions was also set up. - Analysis of sulphur-traces in steel: a novel method has been developed for the detection of sulphur in steel. It is based on a calibration using synthetic solutions prepared from weighed amounts of pure substances. Finally, the economic impact of the application of ion chromatography in steel plant laboratories has been evaluated.
