New technologies in commerce : the potential and the cost
The study surveys the diverse effects of new technologies on commercial operations in each of the member states of the European Community. These operations have been streamlined by the growing use of credit cards, charge cards and debit cards. Reports reveal national preferences for Eurocheque cards, EFTPOS systems, in-house shopping cards or smart cards. Also increasing is the use of product coding systems by the retail trades, particularly for food products, since the European Article Numbering (EAN) barcode system was established. Developments in information dissemination technology include the setting up of databases and a variety of data transmission links, the latter usually run by national telecommunications authorities. Current and prospective applications are reviewed, revealing advantages particularly for retail chains, mail order firms and large economic groupings, but also problems for small businesses.
