Abstract

Analysis of two time-scales tearing growth shows that the growth rate of the precursors can change by orders of magnitude during one sawtooth period provided two conditions are fulfilled. It is shown that small variations of the current profiles will lead to spectacular changes in the MHD solution provided they are characterised by a rapid change of slope and a small shear at the q=l surface. These profile properties have been observed in TEXTOR discharges.
