Abstract

Alternative improved housing systems for poultry are the subject of this seminar, which examines systems developed in the Netherlands not based on battery cages. Other reports are presented from several Member States of the Community and from Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. The main topics included are an inventory of all the systems developed, welfare and the utilisation of space in these systems and the zootechnical and economic aspects. The main conclusion drawn is that essential progress has been made in the development of alternative housing systems in several countries, to the point where several systems are ready for commercial trials. For improved management of these systems, further basic research is needed into the prevention of feather pecking and cannibalism, into light requirements and into inspection characteristics.
