This is the fourth and last Annual Progress Report of the European Community's 1984-88 programme of research into the decommissioning of nuclear installations. It describes the objectives, scope and work programme of each research contract concluded, as well as the progress of work achieved and the results obtained in 1988. Research and development projects concerned the following subjects: - Long-term integrity of building and systems; - Decontamination for decommissioning purposes; - Dismantling techniques; - Treatment of specific waste materials: steel, concrete and graphite; - Large containers for radioactive waste produced in the dismantling of nuclear installations; - Estimation of the quantities of radioactive wastes arising from the decommissioning of nuclear installations in the Community; - Influence of installations design features on decommissioning. Testing of new techniques under real conditions, within the framework of large-scale decommissioning operations undertaken in Member States, is also reported.
