Abstract

This paper presents a list of discussion points concerning the application of microwave remote sensing to forestry areas. The principles of measurement are outlined, relating microwaves to the optical system. Parameters are proposed which could characterise forestry targets, to give not just the localisation of vegetation but also a detailed analysis of its 3-d structure and status. Elements of the future JRC programme are listed, including EURACS (European radar cross section database) and its extension (MAESTRO), the ERS-1 pilot project and the SIR-C/X-SAR experiments, planned for the years 1990-3.
