Abstract

The paper develops an expert system, to improve current possibilities for structural safety and reliability analysis of critical pressurised components (e.g. vessels, piping, feedwater tanks, etc.) of large power and process plants. Quicker assessments can be made. The system should enable the use of non-numeric, qualitative, incomplete, imprecise and/or uncertain data; present methodologies, which are mostly numeric, do not consider such data. The architecture and paradigms of the modules of the system are described. The use of deep knowledge and the coupling of symbolic and numeric analyses are considered; incorporation of deep knowledge leads to better handling of unexpected events.
