Two companion papers presented at the "Piero Caldirola" International School of Plasma Physics deal with problems related to the design of a target imploded by thermal soft X-rays. The first paper considers a target enclosed in a cavity formed by high Z-walls with a uniformly distributed source of thermal radiation. After a short transitory, an equilibrium will be created where the input power is balanced by losses to the material surfaces. Equations for the confinement time for the radiation and for the ratio of the absorbed power densities at the target and wall surfaces are derived. The first paper also defines a method for a rough estimate of these two parameters, and briefly considers the quality of the surface illumination and the problem of transverse diffusion. The second paper discusses the behaviour of a high gain target designed according to the above principles.
