237Np Mössbauer spectroscopy on NpSe
Studies have been carried out to determine the magnetic and electronic properties of the neptunium compounds with NaCl structure such as monopnictides and monochalcogenides. Mössbauer measurements are reported using the 59.6 keV resonance of 237Np in NpSe over the temperature range from 4.2 K to 49 K. NpSe has the NaCl cubic structure with a lattice parameter of 5.8A. This corresponds to a Np-Np separation of 4.1A. Susceptibility measurements show a Curie Weiss like behaviour between approximately 45 K and 150 K with n(eff) = 2.n(B) and T(p) = (- 140) K approximately. At T>150 K the reciprocal susceptibility is not strictly linear in temperature. Antiferromagnetic ordering is observed at T(N) = 38 K.
