Abstract

Twenty five reports are presented on the walnut and hazel trees. These were concerned mainly with the following themes:- selection of varieties and improvement of genetics, physiology and cytogenetics, nematodes, viruses, bacterial diseases, water requirements, management of the orchard, methods of increasing stocks. The following priorities for future years were defined:-creation of high performing varieties, lessening of the unproductive period of young orchards by increasing the density of planting (making trees behave as a fruiting hedge), lowering costs of production by an integrated mechanisation of the harvest and by improved handling of cultivation techniques particularly in the areas of feeding minerals and water to the trees, and better knowledge and control of the phytosanitary problems encountered.
