These proceedings present the lectures of a European conference on timber structures held in Luxembourg in September 1988, together with the essential points of the discussions. The conference dealt firstly with the draft Eurocode 5, in which the design rules for load-bearing timber structures have been given, and which was published some time before the conference took place. The conference aimed to give the necessary information about its background, and also to open a thorough discussion. This presentation of Eurocode 5 allowed valuable comments to be obtained before its final drafting. A second goal of the symposium was to demonstrate the possiblities of the use of timber for building and engineering structures. Many examples of historical and especially modern applications were demonstrated and discussed, as well as various philosophies about better education in the use and possibilities of timber. The third aim was to inform the participants about work of the Commission services concerning the harmonization of codes and standards and about its programmes in the field of forestry and use of wood.
