Abstract

The use of renewable energy sources and energy derived from waste has been increasingly discussed and investigated since the seventies. In the meantime there is a wide consensus of opinion in the engineering field that the present state of the economy provides only a very limited scope for action. The Energie-Versorgung Schwaben AG (EVS), responsible for the indirect and direct power supply of about 3.3 million inhabitants in the south west of the Federal Republic of Germany has been investigating the problems of the industrial utilisation of waste for power generation for a long time. EVS provides support to the operators of waste dumps, normally rural district councils, in the task of utilising landfill gas. For reasons of environmental protection, landfill gas must first be collected before utilisation to prevent the occurrence of obnoxious smells and vegetation damage in the areas surrounding waste dumps. One of the possibilities is the generation of electric power in the unit-type power plants running on landfill gas.
