The workshop was intended to provide a clear indication to responsible international and national bodies of future activities that would be desirable in the field of nephrotoxicity due to chemicals. The scientific and applied aspects of nephrotoxicity and the impact on human health of exposure to nephrotoxic chemicals were examined. The workshop consisted of twenty-four invited papers and four group discussions covering human groups at risk of renal disease, chemically induced nephropathy, mechanisms of nephrotoxicity, markers for the detection of prognostic assessment of renal disease, and current and future test strategies for the screening of nephrotoxic chemicals.
