This publication contains the proceedings of a 1988 workshop on fusion plasma theory. The first paper focusses on the effect of the magnetic separatrix on the stability of semi-collisional toroidal modes destabilised by ion temperature gradients and trapped electron dynamics. The eigen mode equation is solved for a model equilibrium. Secondly the linear theory of LH wave propagation and absorption is reviewed, with reference to its use in modelling of LHCD and heating experiments. The variation of n(parallel) along the rays is studied for the case of multiple wall reflections and a diffusion coefficient is defined. The third paper studies the numerical simulation of ion temperature gradient driven turbulence, using a spectral code. Direct simulation is compared with simple analytic theory for applications such as the mixing length estimate. The final paper analyses toroidal semi-collisional microinstabilities driven by trapped electron dynamics and ion temperature gradients using kinetic theory. Particular attention is given to the modelling of anomalous electron and ion thermal conductivity.
