By investigating the product strategy, competence requirements and personnel and training needs of West German and British manufacturers of equipment incorporating microelectronics, the role and nature of each application can be explained and the relative strengths of sectors in the two countries compared. The sectors studied are mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and data processing equipment, vehicle manufacture, precision machines and optics, and the installation and servicing of products incorporating microelectronics.
