Abstract

As a preparatory study for the foundry project, an ion beam mixing experiment on a Cu - Ag sandwich was performed. The aim was to become familiar with the problems arising in the ion implantation technique and to test several characterisation methods such as e.g. SEM, RBS, AES and X-ray spectroscopy. It was shown that the result of the mixing process is a metastable solid Ag - Cu solution, whereas in thermodynamic equilibrium the Ag - Cu system shows a large miscibility gap. The results obtained are in agreement with earlier experiments of Tsaur et al.
