Abstract

The report describes the design and performance of a miniature hydrophone suitable for the accurate measurement of ultrasonic fields such as are used in medical diagnosis, monitoring, therapy and lithotripsy. These fields have high frequency components, or are highly focussed. If the use of ultrasound is to remain within safety limits, it is therefore essential for the hydrophones to have a wide bandwidth and a small effective radius. The proposed design is based on an existing range of PVDF membrane hydrophones, the bilaminar shielded version giving the best signal to noise ratio. The experimental evaluation of several designs is reported.
