  • Sputtering yields and angular distributions of the eroded atoms for deuterium irradiation of stainless steel 304 LN at temperatures between 300 and 1200 K

Abstract

The sputtering yields and angular distributions of the main components of stainless steel 304 LN have been measured for 1 keV deuterium ion bombardment at normal incidence as a function of the deuterium fluence and target temperature by weight loss and by using the catcher foil technique and PIXE analysis. For low ion fluences the angular distribution is "over-cosine" approaching a cosine or even an "under-cosine" distribution with increasing ion fluence and temperature. The erosion yields deduced from the catcher foil analysis are always smaller than those measured by weight loss. The yields are nearly independent of the target temperature between room temperature and 800 K, slightly enhanced at 1050 K and a factor of 2 to 3 higher at 1200 K. At the higher temperature, in addition to sputtering, a large erosion is observed due to heating alone. This consists mainly of preferential mass loss of Mn and some Cr. The concentrations of the sputtered Fe, Cr and Ni collected on the catcher foils show enhanced sputtering of Cr and Ni at low fluence. With increasing deuterium fluence, concentrations approached the bulk concentration of the stainless steel.
