Abstract

The residual surface stresses introduced in silicon nitride ceramics by abrasive machining have been studied. An X-ray stress analysis technique has been used for the characterization of the stresses on the Si(3)N(4) surface prepared by several machining routes. The appropriate X-ray elastic constants of the (323)-Si(3)N(4) plane were measured and the residual stresses estimated.
