Abstract

CHEMVAL is an international geochemical exercise, which aims at the application and validation of predictive computer programs describing the chemistry of radionuclides in the geosphere, as part of the project MIRAGE. Stage I concerns the application of aqueous speciation codes to representative cement, water and groundwater compositions. This report describes the methodology and the results of the verification exercise and summarises work in progress on the thermodynamic database. The reasons for variation in modelling results have been identified. Problems associated with chemical equilibrium programs and their use have been distinguished from differences in the supporting database. It is concluded that the codes employed during the first part of the exercise are suitable for the validation studies in Stage 2.
