Abstract

The objectives of organic farming are to gain acceptance of more environmentally friendly production methods and to provide consumers with guaranteed, high-quality products. This publication contains a description of organic farming in each of the EEC states, dealing mainly with: legislation, the leading organisations, commercial seals, training, research, production, processing, international exchanges, distribution and demand. The data have been collected in a survey covering administrative services, universities, schools, organisations and companies involved in this type of farming. This is innovative work, aiming to give a clearer picture of the chief operators on the organic farming scene and to identify the main lines on which they are working. The available official statistics do not differentiate between organic and non-organic farming methods or products; much of the data consists of estimates which must be regarded with caution.
