Second exercise of the longterm experiment with Ispra sealing-bolts at the BNFL Sellafield facilityFunded under: JRC-SAFEFM 5C
In 1986, a number of sealing-bolts developed by JRC-Ispra were installed on a spent fuel container's lid, at the BNFL plant at Sellafield. In December 1986, a first verification exercise showed a good performance by seals, equipments and measuring instruments. This was reported in July 1987. The current paper deals with the second field-test carried out in October 1987 under severe water and outdoor conditions. Sealing-bolts installed at the beginning were properly reverified, revealing no ageing or corrosion effect on the identity of the seals. New mechanically improved sealing-bolts were also installed and their breaking/removal procedures were tested successfully.
