This special issue presents the proceedings of a workshop held in September 1988 on the transfer of radionuclides to livestock. The papers presented primarily addressed the problems of radionuclide contamination of fodder, from fallout from Chernobyl or other sources, under a wide variety of husbandry practices. Remedial countermeasures available to the farmer, and their use in emergency circumstances, were described and evaluated. The problems of animal transfer of contamination (to cattle, sheep, reindeer and domestic animals) and its role in the food chain (through use of animal products, particularly milk and milk products) were evidenced both from field observations and experimental studies.
