Abstract

Electronic data interchange (EDI) involves the exchange of information and messages between trading partners or public administrations via electronic means of communication, either through the exchange of magnetic media or via telecommunications networks, both of which link computer to computer. The CEC action plan for the development of such systems, TEDIS, is described by means of five factsheets. The first outlines the advantages and objectives of such a system, and the second relates these to the European Telecom market. Legal aspects, EDI security and the EDIFACT set of standards and guidelines are also described.
